Here at Talbert Building Supply, we recently expanded our business, and our newest location is in Danville, VA. This area of Virginia has seen pivotal historic events and cultural shifts, and the city of Danville has roots dating back to the Revolutionary War. We’re proud to serve the community and look forward to exploring one of the most famous regions in the Commonwealth.
A History of Danville, VA
English colonist William Byrd camped with his party along what he named the “Dan River,” before the Revolutionary War — after more settlers came to the area, the town was officially named Danville in 1793. That same year, a tobacco production facility was built in town, establishing Danville as “the World’s Best Tobacco Market.”
After the end of the Civil War, tobacco processing and textiles became significant industries in the region, and several of the country’s largest railway systems were built through Danville. The Southern Railway is still used by Amtrak today and acts as a branch of the Virginia Museum.
The city is home to centuries of important American history, and this includes some of the architecture and historic neighborhoods in Danville. There are several homes, buildings, and warehouses on the National Register of Historic Places in Danville. Other memorabilia and exhibits are on display at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts.
Danville has been a significant landmark throughout the last few centuries. Today, Danville is recognized as a Playful City. Playful City USA is a national program “that honors cities and towns across the nation who put their children's well-being first by recognizing and harnessing the power of play.”
The city of Danville has fun festivities for people of all ages — events like the Carrington Pavilion concert series and theater productions are hosted throughout the year for residents and visitors alike.
There are a few other attractions in town that we’re fond of, and we talked to some of Talbert’s team members to find out what their favorite spots are.
Talbert Team Favorites
There’s a lot to enjoy about Danville, and if you have a day or weekend (or longer) to enjoy this charming Virginia town, we have a few items to add to your itinerary.
If you’re hungry, Danville offers a few restaurants that the family or visitors will enjoy.
Joanne Leopold, the Danville location Office Manager, recommends a few downtown establishments.
“There’s a new restaurant, Bricktown Brewery, that’s reasonably priced,” says Joanne. Kickback Jack’s is also a great locale for a fun night out and ideal for groups or families. And if anyone needs dessert, the local ice cream shop, Bubba’s, is sure to please.
If you’re planning a date night in Danville, there are a few options in the downtown area. Cotton at Riverside Mill offers a view of the Dan River on its patios, and Mucho Taqueria is a tequila bar that serves fresh tacos, also located in the historic river district.
Brittany Rella is part of Talbert’s sales team and recommends a few reliable spots for lunch in Danville.
Nonni’s Pizza: Delicious pizza by the pie or slice
Crema & Vine: A restaurant, coffee shop, and wine bar all in one
Los Tres Magueyes: Mexican food made with love
Nana Karen’s on Main: A local favorite that serves breakfast and lunch
More Things to Do in Danville
After you’ve eaten, there are a few other ways to keep everyone entertained in Danville. With a highly walkable downtown area, historic landmarks, museums, and riverside trails, the city has much to offer.
Rent a bike or explore the Dan River by foot along the city’s main Riverside Trail. If you want to get closer to the water, kayaks are also available for those who want to paddle along the historic waterfront.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors, history, and community of Danville, no matter how long your visit might be.
Doing Business in Danville
There are even more opportunities for fun (and growth) in Danville’s future: Caesar’s Resorts announced the opening of a Virginia location in Danville.
The resort will include a 500-room hotel and casino, along with “a full-service spa, pool, high-quality bars and restaurants, a 2,500-seat state-of-the-art live entertainment theater, and 40,000 square feet of meeting and convention space,” according to a press release.
Construction started on the casino in the summer of 2022, and Caesar’s Resorts expects that “the full-service entertainment facility will create thousands of construction and operational jobs and is scheduled to open in late 2024.”
Talbert Is Thrilled to Serve the Danville Community
We’re thrilled to see this kind of growth and opportunity in the Danville region and are honored to be a part of the community. The city is rich in history and continues to be a thriving home and destination for the people of Virginia.
The Danville branch opened in March 2022 after purchasing the location from Plyler Supply Company. “We are excited to expand into Danville with our second Virginia branch,” said Dan Talbert, president of Talbert.
Danville’s location, welcoming community, and history make it the perfect place to call home. “Ultimately, we plan to develop the property into a full-line lumber yard. We look forward to growing in Danville and continuing to serve the surrounding communities,” said Dan Talbert.
