Roxboro is a scenic and vibrant city in North Carolina and home to the corporate headquarters of Talbert Building Supply. The city has tons to offer to residents and visitors that love the outdoors, are looking for a great bite to eat, or want to participate in exciting local festivals in the area.
If you’re looking for inspiration when you begin to plan your next home project, Roxboro also has a number of historic homes and buildings that can help spark ideas and creativity. There are (more than) a few exciting things to do, see, and learn from in Roxboro, NC!
As a local building supply, Talbert has deep roots in the Roxboro community. Our flagship location was established here in the 1980s, developed from a sawmill and planner mill founded in the 1950s known as Talbert & Talbert Lumber Co. Our team knows this city inside and out, and we’re excited to share some of our favorite things to do in our hometown of Roxboro!
All About Growth
Before we give you the scoop on where to go, you should know the history of the area. Roxboro is in Person County and home to the county seat. The city was incorporated in 1855 and has grown over the years but still features several buildings and homes (including the county courthouse) on the National Register of Historic Places.
Roxboro is near the Research Triangle region of North Carolina, where you can find a growing number of technology companies and startup enterprises. Being adjacent to the area has influenced growth in our small city, and the economy has expanded to include several industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to wineries.
The city attracts tourists and residents with festivals and other community events in the area, including the two-day Personality Festival, the Lake Mayo Canoe/Kayak Festival, and Shrimp Fest. The Person County Farmers Market is an open-air market that features produce and other food products from local farmers and runs every first Saturday.
It’s no wonder the city’s motto is “Progress Is Our Business.” An excellent place to live, work, and play, Talbert is thrilled to call Roxboro home to our corporate headquarters — after all, it’s where Talbert’s story began. We’re excited to grow here in Roxboro, and our team members have a few recommendations for things to do, whether you’re just visiting or have lived here for years.
Things to Do in Roxboro, NC
Tunnel Creek Vineyards
Meaghan Ashley is the Marketing Specialist at Talbert Building Supply. She recently visited Tunnel Creek Vineyards in Roxboro, when Talbert supplied a variety of construction materials. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to have partnered with owners Larry & Sharon Holler to create such a special place in Person County,” says Meaghan. “It is stunning!”
Tunnel Creek is a beautiful new winery and event venue in the area and sits on 400 acres of North Carolina’s rolling hills. Check their hours and find some time to stop by to taste their selection of wines or reach out to plan your next special event!
Brookland Eats, Black Creek, and More
Talaya Barnett is Talbert’s Staff Accountant and enjoys many local establishments in Roxboro. She highly recommends Brookland Eats, a restaurant that’s owned and operated by Chef David Gaydeski, who worked as Executive Chef to three North Carolina governors.
“They have a really delicious ribeye steak,” says Talaya. “The ambiance is excellent with the ‘twinkle lighting’ and dimmed overhead lights. It’s a busy restaurant, but the food is great, and the atmosphere is nice!”
She also recommends a few other venues if you’re looking for evening fun. “Some nights, it’s nice to hit Black Creek Brewery or 1792. The Black Creek Brewery has good beer, but the best part for me are the owners,” says Talaya. “Mike and Kate Lagaly make you feel at home when you’re in the brewery.”
Black Creek hosts outside dining and occasional live entertainment, so even if you’re not a beer drinker, “it’s a great place to hang out; catch a great food truck; great live entertainment on occasion; and you can even bring your own food,” says Talaya.
1792 Beer Co. serves up more than beer to its patrons. “They offer trivia night and great food trucks, as well. Zac and Kyle are great owners ...1792 supports local businesses in the area by selling their products,” explains Talaya.
And if you need to end the evening on a sweeter note, Talaya recommends a hidden gem in town. “Shell Gas Station (the one on the hill) has a great banana split,” she says, “and has a sign that advertises hand-dipped ice cream... ice cream that’s made in Mooresville, NC.”
Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors
There are tons of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Roxboro, but we’re going to hit the highlights for you. One popular activity is checking out the Person County Farmers Market, open every first Saturday in the business district from May through September. You’ll be able to find fresh produce, baked goods, and meat from local vendors at this seasonal open-air market.
Donald Clayton, Vice President of Purchasing for Talbert, also recommends both Hyco Lake and Mayo Lake for boating and water sports, along with camping, fishing, and kayaking for anyone who wants to get on the water.
And if you want to watch a game with locals: “Bushy Fork has a men’s softball league during the spring and summer,” says Talaya. “It’s a good outdoor escape during the week and a good outdoor wind-down on a Friday evening.”
